D & C stands for Dilatation and curettage, or its also called uterine scraping. The vaginal canal is held open by a speculum. The cervical canal is widened using a metal rod, and a curette (a metal loop on the end of a long, thin handle) is passed through the uterus. The inner layer of the uterus is scraped away and may be held for examination. This is often done for removal of fetal or placental tissue for a miscarriage thats incomplete or spontaneous abortion.

dilation and curettage

The dilation and curettage procedure is called a D&C. The D stands for dilation, which means enlarging. Curettage (the C) means scraping. Together, this procedure involves expanding or enlarging the entrance of a woman’s uterus so that a thin, sharp instrument can scrape or suction away the lining of the uterus and take tissue samples.

Today, the procedure is routine and considered safe. It is minor surgery performed in a hospital or ambulatory surgery center or clinic. D&C is usually a diagnostic procedure and seldom is therapeutic. It may stop bleeding for a little while (2-6 months), then the prior abnormal bleeding tends to return.

D&C stands for dilatation and curretage, meaning that they dilate the cervix to gain access to the uterus, where the lining of the uterus is stripped using an instrument called a currette.
