By law, a fetus is only a human once it leaves the woman's body. However, there is some ethical and religious controversy about this, especially regarding abortion. Although by law a fetus within the womb is technically not a human being, consider these things: the fetus's heart is beating, its brain is functioning, and it already has all the genes in its cells to tell all of the traits of the soon-born child. This is how scientists define living organisms, isn't it? Although the fetus still relies on the mother host for survival, within a matter of months, it is fending for itself. After all, don't many other animals - including young kangaroos and tape worms and such - rely on other animals for survival. Interesting question, though, I'm writing a persuasive on abortion and I have the same issue to write about.

That all depends on who you're talking to. According to those who are Pro-Life...there is a human being at conception....this doesn't make sense to me (I'm Pro-Choice).Think about it this way...if they can call a few cells a human being, then we can also call a brick a house. A fetus is a fetus...it's like comparing apples to oranges...you can't do it. A fetus is a stage of development in the womb on the way to becoming a viable human being. The key word, in my opinion, in this conversation is viable. You can't take a fertilized egg that is only, let's say, 6 week's along out of the womb, dress it up, and call it human. It's still a grouping of cells with the potential of developing into a fetus and thus into a human being.

I'd also like to add something about those who are Pro-Choice...we aren't PRO ABORTION....we're for the right to choose and not have some Pro-Life zealot tell us what we can and can't do with our reproductive organs. It is our right as American citizens to choose whether or not it is a fetus...whether or not to have an abortion...the Pro-Life agenda doesn't leave much room for anyone to have their own opinion...

It's an embryo at conception. Doesn't become a fetus till later. And yes, a fetus should be considered a human. I know a woman who had her baby at 20 weeks and with the miracle of medical progress and a miracle period he's a healthy happy 4 year old now.

A fetus is the technical term for a human being before they are born. When they are born, they are called infants. Later, they become children, and eventually, adults. All the while, they are human beings. They are nothing else.

The law changes. Two men were walking down the street in 1932. One had a gold coin in his pocket, the other had a bottle of whiskey he had just purchased. The man with the gold coin was not violating the law, the other man was in violation of the Prohibition Act. One year later, the two men were walking down the same street. Now, the man with the gold coin was in violation because he had failed to turn his gold in when FDR demanded it. The man with the whiskey was not in violation of the law. Prohibition had been repealed. So, man's law changes. God's law doesn't.

Your question is about what makes us all human beings. I think it's the abillity of reasoning, the mere mental capabilities of our species. Thus, a fetus could be considered a human being from the moment at which the brain is completly formed.

Under the law, the fetus is not yet a human being. For science, life starts when the fetus is already existing. Thus, the Penal Law already penalizes someone who commits abortion.

It depends on your point of view. I think it is because it has a heart beat. Others would agrue against it, but I don't care.
