WHA?

These estimates are WAY TOO HIGH.

There are at least a couple of billion people who make less than the cost of a computer in one year. I'd say they can't afford it, or even people who make more than that, what with the desire to eat once in a while.

By "everyone in the world" standards, you'd have to be quite rich to afford a computer.

You MIGHT be able to find this info if you were to dig around the UN web site. But I imagine it would take some good digging.

The question was about the WORLD, not your country (which, since you're here, probably is wealthier than a lot of countries).

I would hazard a guess at 20%.

Maybe less, since you'd need electricity (and these puppies use a lot of that).

It would be interesting to know for real, though.

A lot of people who use computers use them at work, and can't afford one of their own (I used to be one of these, only got a computer in 2000). I assume they don't count, since you say "afford" -- and the question would arise what would people have to give up to "afford" a computer, that is, what standard would one use?

"If none of my family buy winter coats this year, we could afford a computer." Would those people count?

Sorry for the rant on your reasonable (and interesting) question. I originally clicked it because I was curious.

But I think the other answers have an unrealistic view of how much money most people in the world have.

They can have some of my old pc's if they want. Some second hand pcs, powerful enough to surf net, are just pretty worthless today. Yet there is a company making a <$100 pc for world's poor.

Plus your question.. you have to factor in elecricity and maybe telephoney/adsl connection.. which might be more of a problem for the world's poor. If i was poor my main concern would be food and shelter. After that it would be getting a pc to get to Yahoo Answers.
