I have noticed since moving down south, that some men that I meet whether it be husbands of my co-workers or men that you meet because they are going to do work on your home, look down rather than into my face when we are talking. They absolutely will not look at me. This does not happen all the time but it has happened frequently enough that I have noticed it.

I teach school and one dad always drops his child off at my classroom, I have yet to see his face. He talks to my shoes.

What is it? I have asked my husband and he does not have a clue. Why they do that?

I'm from the south (Georgia) and you are correct. Not everyone does this but many guy's look down or away when talking to someone.I'm guilty of this and don't really have a good explanation why.I think that in the south we have a more laid back attitude and not an in your face type of personality. Not sure if this has anything to do with it but it seems like most people would rather talk than have a staring contest.

I lived in the south for several years and my best guess is it is a sign of respect to someone who is female, or is in an authority position. Many people in the south were raised to say "sir" and "ma'am", and to show respect to those they meet. Looking someone in the eyes can be seen as challenging, or aggressive.

Or it could be they are shy, or you wear really cool shoes. Happy holidays!

checking out the shoes. No really, I don't think it is limited to any geographical area. Some look you in the eye and some don't.
