For trapping pocket gophers, must you always cover the area the traps are in to keep out light?

I've always used the Macabee trap (with the 2 sharp pinchers on both sides). After setting the trap, I usually cover the holes with clods of grass. It's believed that the holes leading to the traps should be covered with enough vegetation to prevent any light from entering the tunnel but you shouldn't cover it up tightly. Air flowing through the vegetation signals the gopher to come up and plug the opening and therefore setting off the trap.

IF you haven't ever used this type of trap, I'd advise you to secure your traps with wires and stake them down to prevent any dog or cat from walking your gopher and trap.
