I don't know anything about digital music players, so please excuse my ignorance.

If I buy an iPod, will I be able to buy music from sites other than iTunes?

And if I get another brand of digital music player, will I have the option of purchasing from iTunes?

Also, is iPod relatively hassle-free? Yes or no?

Ipods are an emmense hassle, and it's not user error. From day one, every ipod I've ever met hasn't worked as advertised. look at some of my other answers if you want to hear about some personal issues with the ipod.

-You can buy songs from some other sites but many of them may not be compatible with your iPod. Say you download from Yahoo! music or www.walmart.com, you won't be able to transfer them to iTunes because they're in 'protected' format.
- No. Itunes is proprietary, which means you can only use iTunes music with an iPod and not with any other mp3 player.
- I've had my iPod (30 GB video) for almost a year now and I haven't had too many problems with it, except the battery tends to drain pretty fast.

itunes, unless you want to covert all the formats of your music. Get a Creative Zen Vision M, its more user-friendly, and supports formats from all music stores.
