Our family computer (desktop) is going extremely slow. It is almost two years old.

We will have the computer all start up and then we won't be able to move the mouse. Or if we do try and move it, it will take awhile. It is defanitly not because the mouse is broken

Any ideas?!

Bad answers...
Do this:
1. Run disc cleanup
2. Run disc defragmenter
3. Download and Run Ad-Aware
4. Download and Run Spybot - Search and Destroy

If you need help with any of these things, send me a message either through the Yahoo! Answers system or at my email, david_lapierre@sbcglobal.net

You may have some program using too much CPU. Waol.exe often is a CPU hog. If you have windows XP do a CNTL+ALT+DEL which will show a list of running programs. Look at the bottom... if CPU Usage is over 90% a program is slowing your computer down. If yes, click on CPU twice which will sort the list of programs putting the highest users at the top. "System Idle Process" normaly is at the top and is OK. Explore.exe, iexplore.exe and system are usually up near the top and are OK. If there is an aol,exe or waol.exe near the top click on it, then click on the "End Process" button at the bottom, then click Ok to the warning. If no aol or waol look for one that starts with "hp" and "End Process" it. If all the programs on the list are 5 or less then they are probably all OK and something else is slowing you down. Warning: if you "end" a critical process your computer may lock up and you'll have to reboot. Good luck.

Working with a slow computer can be time consuming as programs/ applications take a long time to start. This problem is more pronounced in computers which have been used for 6 or more months. More information at http://fixit.in/slowcomputer.html

if you have a 512mb memory (RAM) module then it's ok but if you want your computer to be fast then add some more memory module, make it 1gig of memory or try 1.5gig of memory.

Another option would be... Start->Run->"MSCONFIG" then check if some programs might be running that you might not notice it. That is the reason why it might be running slow because your computer runs two or three programs or more.

One thing also avoid to many Shortcut icons from you desktop and remove some task icon from your task bar.

And to avoid crashes from your computer minimize your graphics from your desktop coz it eats up to much memory

You should run some anti spyware or an anti virus on the computer. It's a common thing that makes computers slow.

Anti-virus, Anti spyware, defragment the drive, disk cleanup, increase virtual memory.

If that fails to speed up your computer you could always just reformat the hard drive.

Buying more RAM for your computer will speed it up.

ez cleaner does much of this: http://personal.inet.fi/business/toniarts/ecleane.htm (used to be http://www.toniarts.com, just changed recently.)

check your diskspace. (My Computer, right click on the C: drive, how much pink vs. how much blue...it's good to stay under 70% of the drive space used.

Clear off unused programs (Start button, control panel, add or remove programs.)

Clear off your temporary files in your browser (tools, internet options, delete temporary files, cookies, whatever you like.)

Clean up your registry.
http://www.eusing.com/free_registry_cleaner/registry_cleaner.htm

defrag your drive.
http://familyinternet.about.com/od/teachingyourkids/a/speedupcomputer.htm

use anti-virus protection:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

get and update spyblaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/
get and update spybot S&D: http://www.safer-networking.org/
get k9 web protection to know what's coming in when and decide what you want coming in: http://www.k9webprotection.com/

Amout of RAM amount of disk space available are a big ones.

Take heed with a lot of these answers...you've got a good overall picture of how to attack this.
