She's almost 4 months old and she likes her pacifier, but her thumb is the next best thing, and it seems to sooth her, and she can always find it.
And please don't tell me any of those old wives tales about making teeth comming in crooked. Everyone knows thats not true. Children who stop sucking their thumbs by age 5 will not have dental problems.
It's nature's pacifier, right?

I was a thumb sucker and I was a very content child. Never got into any trouble and my teeth are fine. I was always told that I have a beautiful smile. Sucked my thumb until about age 17 or 18. Never wore braces.
The doctors told my mom that I was sucking my thumb in the womb bc I was sucking shortly after birth and knew how to find that right handed thumb!!
My second daughter, who is now 26 with two children sucks her thumb along with her five year old daughter. :O
I had to get braces for my daughter but I waited until high school hoping she would try to give up the thumb but she didn't. She wore a retainer and everything. Her teeth to this day are still straight and she is still sucking her thumb but she is more caucious of it now.
We can't tell just yet if my granddaughter will need braces or not.
My daughter was the best baby out of my four children. When she wanted to take a nap, she just took one, never had to fight with her to go to sleep. She was and still is a social butterfly. Knew just about everyone in her high school.
My granddaughter is also taking on her mom's personality by being very social among her peers while she still will stick that thumb into her mouth. (No shame at all) :)
All children don't stop sucking their thumbs by age 5. It is not a disgrace and there is nothing wrong with a child who sucks their thumb. It does not mean the child is insecure or has some sort of issue.
Like you said, it is soothing and calming to the baby.
A THUMB SUCKING BABY IS A CONTENT AND WELL ROUNDED BABY/CHILD.
Leave her alone and let her be her. :)

Thumb sucking is probably good for small children. I sucked my thumb in the womb. Pacifiers are just a pain. You're always having to pick it up and wash it and deal with crying when its dropped. Also, many little kids look like idiots if they have a pacifier for a long time. Especially if they give it a nickname. Thumb sucking is just kind of cute, as long as you stop it before she is five or so. Stopping shouldn't be a problem when she has friends her age. If she doesn't stop on her own, a harmless bribe works well. That's how I stopped when I was four.

Breaking a thumb habit is a lot easier than breaking a pacifier habit. Thumb sucking doesn't cause any problems until after the age of 4. Pacifier cause ear infections and some other things, and some babies just don't like them. My daughter is a thumb sucker, and I'm glad.

My mother allowed my younger brother to suck his thumb, she hated pacifiers, thought they "spoiled the look of the baby".... He ended up having a massive panic before going to France with the school in case he sucked his thumb at night in the dorm... he was 15 by then, and said that because it was there he couldnt resist it. Having seen the upset he went through because of this, I refused to let my own children suck their thumbs, gave them pacifiers, and slowly and gently removed them over a couple of months when they were 2 so they didnt need them at nursery school. None of my three children have sucked their thumb or had issues relating to the matter. As you say, she can always find her thumb, you cant put that in the bin when she's older...
It is personal choice, but that has been my experience.

I sucked my thumb when I was little. I have straight teeth and no issues as a result. And my thumb is not deformed! That's just dumb. I think as long as it soothes her then it's ok. Just realize that at a certain age she has to stop, that way it shouldn't be an issue when she's older.

I don't see any reason why you should make her stop sucking her thumb. I think it's cute. My younger brother did when he was a baby and now his 4 month old daugher does. I don't believe in those old wives tales. As long as its soothes and makes her happy that's all that should matter.

All my kids sucked their thumb & they're all fine now.
No misaligned teeth either. If she wants to suck her thumb & it sooths her, then let her do it.
