It depended on what tribe of Native American you are talking about. Each had different naming practices. But in general Native Americans named the area where they lived...

The Iroquois called it "Great Turtle Island." They believed that the land was on the back of a huge turtle.

Different Native American tribes probably had different names and traditions; I only know the Iroquois one because my husband is Iroquois.

I'm 1/4 Miwok (California) and I don't know of any 1 name we have for the country. We call our "area" of land or the land we dwell on "Moo-koo." I'm not sure there were any considerations toward the country or continent.
