My Dell laptop LCD is very dim now, can't see the background clearly. Can it be repaired and how much it will cost? Where can I find a cheap reapir shop to do it? Thank you very much.

The screen doesn't need to be replaced. If you can see it, it is working just fine. Some places will try to tell you it needs to be replaced, they are lying.

However, it sounds like your inverter or your bulb has gone bad. The prices of these vary, but generally inverters are around $40-$125 and bulbs vary depending on the screen size, but around $25-$75

In short, the LCD is fine. However that LCD screen is not lit. The most common cause is the inverter, which powers the bulb. But can also be the bulb itself. Generally speaking, if it's a result of a drop, fall, jostling, etc it's the bulb. If it just went bad, it's probably the inverter.

Be wary of a place that tells you your whole screen is bad, as that is NOT the problem. It's just the screen getting light. (However, they will happily charge you $500 to replace the whole "top lid") Stalk into a place and ask them "Can you order inverters and bulbs for laptop screens?" and if they give you a blank look, find somewhere else.

In truth, you can really replace the inverter yourself, but may be beyond the scope of this question. The inverter part is really easy, the bulb isn't as much.

If you edit your question requesting more information about the inverter and steps you can take, I will edit my answer. Cheers. (the other posters here don't know what they are talking about, it's simply about lighting the LCD or providing power to the components that light it)

If the screen is just dim, the problem could be with other electronics that control the current going through it. If the screen does happen to have a problem, then it can't really be fixed. When a LCD screen goes bad, it stays bad, and you have to buy a new one. You may be able to buy just the LCD screen and put it in yourself, which could range from $200-$500, or you could have a shop/company fix it. They'll normally charge a generous fee. Generous for themselves, of course.

if you are not under warranty, you can get the whole top lid, screen and all, for less than 100 bucks on ebay.
I don't know why people are telling you to buy it in pieces for 200 bucks a piece.

I've had mine recently replaced. If your computer is still under warranty, you can contact Dell and they will send someone to you to replace the screen at no cost.
