Usually if the gift is really terrible (i.e. a CD of a band I don't like, clothes I don't like, cologne that smells bad, a movie I don't like, etc.) I just act like I like it.
Is it really better to lie to the person? I mean, I'm thankful for the thought and the fact that I received a gift, but I feel bad because I'm not being honest.

Don't give me the third world country speech. I lived in a third world country for 8 years.

What is more important to you? To let a friend think you are thrilled by the gift and what a great friend they are or would you concentrate on the gift and not the fact that they thought of you at all. If you choose telling your fiends what terrible gifts they give, I can pretty well promise you they won't bother anymore.

It really is better to lie.
I'm an honest person, but it really is the thought that counts.
There are children who are dying every three seconds in third world countries, man. Live with your crappy gifts.

You should be happy, because someone obviously gave it to you because they love you or care about you. I may not need or really want something I get from people, but then that changes because I know that gift came from the heart. As long as it isn't something insulting being handed to you, then be respectful and appreciative!

just say thinks, try to smile
its the thought that counts
its bad when people get into debt for just the thought.
I sometimes think we should wrap up bricks and exchange them and save em for next year. Just don't unwrap em. Leave the bow on it too. Soooooooooo much easier and cheaper too.

i do the same thing and lie about it . everytime they ask about it i will just say oh yeah i luved it or something like that. i wouldnt want to tell them the truth anyway because it might make them feel bad. besides if it comes with a recipt to return it then all you have to do is take it back and get something you like.

Yes, you are doing the right thing. You don't have to say you like it, but accept it graciously and thank them. Say something like "wow, a lot of people wear this cologne, thanks!" or "these guys are realy popular, thanks" or "this looks really warm, it's a nice material, thanks". You aren't really lying that way and they don't get their feelings hurt. Even if you hate a gift, you like the person for thinking of you and should never hurt their feelings.

From a Christian point of view, it's okay to say that you like something when you really don't. They are asking for an opinion, not a fact.

i think you really should always just say thank you so much! you dont have to say thank you for the gift, just say thank you! that way your not thanking them for the gift, your thanking them for taking the time and money to get something for you. cause its the thought that counts.

Be grateful, but gently hint to the person that what you received is not necessarily to your tastes. And mention that you are thankful for the thought they put into it though.
