Both symbols start with "N", when flaming sodium looks orange/ yellow, Neon is reddish orange.

Not much really - they both have a set of strong emission lines in the visible spectrum, maybe this is what you are looking for. Neon lights, sodium vapour lights.

when sodium is an ion it has the same number of electrons as neon.
