Explain the relationship between river valleys and sea canyons.

They are the same thing,except the river valley's are above sea level and ocean canyons are below sea level.

The sea canyons such as Redondo Canyon off of Redondo Beach California are the remains of river valleys that formed during the Ice Age, when sea level was much lower.

Do you mean the relationship between river valleys and oceanic trenches ?
I don't think these two are related, excepting the fact that both of them are geographic features.
River valleys are formed due to down-cutting action of rivers with or without neo-tectonic upliftment. The valleys are V-shaped, normally becoming wider as the river progresses towards its estuary.
Sea trenches are formed due to plate tectonic activity (subduction zone). The are long, narrow, arcuate and near vertical. Their cross-section does not change much.

Both are formed by water movement and erosion. Ocean currents have the same effect as a river flowing.
