One green puffer would be good for a twenty gallon tank. The fish commonly sold as a green puffer is a brackish water fish so don't keep anything with it and use at least 2 tbsp. of sea salt with each gallon of water. They love snails.

You can only keep one, in a 20 gal tank would be perfect. Puffer fish are really better off as solitary fish as they can be aggressive towards other fish and their own kind.

Also, I don't know where you got your puffer (or are planning on getting it) but many large chains tend to mislabel their puffers. There are many small, spotted puffers. Make sure your's is correctly identified to ensure that you have the proper salinity level: http://puffernet.tripod.com/confusion.html

Your puffer will happily eat snails. Small mollusks, bloodworms and small brine shrimp should also be a part of their diet.

Any style of puffer will eat snails. make confident they're smaller that they are eye in order to overwhelm the shells. If not, then they are going to easily suck out the significant body section, defeating the purpose of wearing down their tooth. No you could not use known backyard snails because they are going to frequently include chemical substances that you do not opt for on your tank. ~ZTM

You can keep about 1-2 in a 10 gal tank (depending on the size) and 2-3 in a 20 gal tank. And, Yes...they will eat snails...
