No

The story behind it is based on Ed Gein

TThe story behind the chainsaw was basically, the director got swarmed by fans in a mall, and looked up, he happened to look into a hardware store with a chainsaw model on desplay, he thought to himself itd be a good way to clear the crowd

The reason th movie says its true, is because it starts off in newscast format, and basically to make it more shocking/gorey

but short answer, no, nonetheless an awesome movie

Edit: It is true however there was A chainsaw murder similar in Texas, two mormons knocked on some guys door, apparently they pissed him off, upon investigation they found human hair in a chainsaw owned by the person who did it, evidence showed the two mormons were chainsawed to death, sounds like it could be real, however this cant be true, because this happened 26 days after the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie came out

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO
Leatherface is based on Ed Gein lore, as is Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lambs. No chainsaw murders have ever been committed on record in Texas, but every small Texas town claims the murders happened in their hometown or two towns over.

Didn't you see the E! True Hollywood Story over this???

Many people spread this rumor and question. Some people may say it was based on true events, but the movie was truly made up. The director had heard about the man killing his neighbor in Wisconsin, which turned into the movie Physco, and it inspired him to make a movie about cannibalism, furniture made of bones etc. So no, this movie was truly made up. Sorry guys!

it is not true. the director was insipired by a chainsaw when he was queing in a store paying or buying something. and that along with the "Ed Gein" murder case in america that time.

theres a movie Ed Gein and that was from a true story.

It's based on a true story. Scary huh? I heard they never found him either, he could be anywhere, doing anything. The movie was dramatized, but people really did get murdered.
