Typically the opposite of x has a negative sign in front. So the opposite of 5 is -5. The inverse of x is typically 1/x. So the inverse of 5 is 1/5.

What's the context? In casual use the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, but whereas "opposite" tends to be reserved for qualitative contrasts in literature and ordinary language ("she's outgoing, he's shy - they're complete opposites!"), formal definitions of inversion abound in logic and mathematics. For example (and since this is a philosophy question), in formal logic the inversion of a conditional proposition is simply the negation of its terms: ~p --> ~q is the inverse of p --> q.

The difference is in the way it is related to 'x'
Inverse is dependent on the value of 'x' and hence proportional, where as opposite is dependent on the negation of its value, and therefore need not be proportional quantitatively, just the quality without any relative proportion too.
