Why do I get so hungry when I'm PMSing? It's not just cravings, either. I just feel like I'm starving, no matter how much I eat or how often. I do get cravings for sweets and such, but what I mostly want is just regular food. Is there a medical explanation?

During PMS, your hormone levels are fluctuating. The chemicals in the brain drives the food cravings. The main culprit is the chemical called serotonin. Serotonin affects your mood and endorphin levels (ie feeling good and/or happy). A quick way to raise serotonin levels is to eat high-fat and sweet foods. However, when one eats these sweets (simple carbs), your blood sugar levels spike up quickly and also fall down quickly. This occurance often leaves you feeling hungry again.

Try to eat complex carbs (whole wheat and oatmeal) which do not raise your blood glucose levels quickly and will keep you satisfied longer. Smaller meals throughout the day will also help you combat those cravings. Hope this helps!
