The reason the manual calls for premium is because it is a high compression engine. If you run cheaper gas the computer will retard the timing to prevent knock, which will occur if you push the engine on cheap gas. When this happens, its not only bad for your engine if the computer cant control the knock, but in doing so your power and fuel mileage will suffer, and you will be losing money in the long run.

You could use regular, but you may get poor gas mileage and it will not run the way it is supposed to. I would just buy the octane booster for ~$1.00 at second hand stores like Big Lots and Ollies. I never had a problem running that in my old car, which required premium gas. Cars are now made with a knock sensor, and with regular it senses denotation and does not advance the timing causing the car to not run as well as it should and get poor gas mileage.

You can try the Premium gas and go down from there... once it starts pinging and losing horsepower, go one grade up and stick with it. Should be no need for Premium on a GT, should on a Turbo though.

Use medium grade gas in all cars that are NOT turbocharged. The "premium" gas just means that it won't cause detonation as easily, a must for racing applications and turbo/ supercharged applications. Hell, use low grade if your not going to rev the heck out of the engine...

it is recomended, but i had one of those cars and put regular in it most of the time and it ran okay, every few tanks or when i noticed it idling rough i would put premium in it and it would run better. as long as you are not driving it like a race car then it will be fine with regular.

i would feel much better running a car with regular that's supposed to have super rather than running super in something that's supposed to have regular like my 01 celica gt thay say to only run regular in the gt celica and super in the gts. its just a little difference in the octane.
