It all depends on what you believe in. I don't think Hallmark made it up, but they do use it for advertisizing. But that movie is a classic! (It's one of my favorites!)

Rudolph was created, not by Hallmark, but by a poet who wanted to write an "Ugly Duckling" type story for Christmas. He modeled his poem upon Clement Clarke Moore's "A Visit from Saint Nicholas" ("Twas the night before Christmas...") The poet was Robert May. His brother-in-law, Johnny Marks, turned May's poem into the song we all know and love.

He is as real as Santa. I think his nose was red from being embarrassed my the other reindeer calling him names.
