My daughter in law is pregnant and had a shower, has all the major products and I don't know what she might need. It has been too many years since I had a newborn around. I was thinking diapers and flour sack dish rags for spit up! I'd appreciate ideas from any new mothers who thought they had everything they could need and what they were missing when the time really came!

BabiesRUs sells "Diaper Gift Cards".. they're awesome! :o) She can use it as she needs to and you don't risk buying the wrong size or brand..! :o)

Definitely clothes for 3 months and above. My son is 4 months old, and we virtually ran out of clothes that fit him around 2 1/2 months... He's wearing 6-12 months size now, so I think they make them a little small (he's a little big for his age--but not that big) Just make sure, if you get older age clothes, that they're appropriate for the season the baby will be wearing them.

Nuk pacifiers, a -big- (and stylish) diaper bag-- does she have an Exersaucer? They are too young 'til around 3 or 4 months, but it's a lifesaver when they're old enough. Lots of cuddly, cute blankets are always good.

And you're on the right track with the burp cloths--but, incidentally, what is a flour sack dish rag? I've never heard of it...is it just literally a dish rag made from a flour sack?

PS. If you do any arts and crafts style things (knit, crochet, paint, etc), new mothers love receiving handmade gifts. My husband's grandmother made a beautiful blue and white checked fluffy blanket for our son, and we love it!

Since this is your daughter in law and not an acquaintance, a great gift would be dropping off dinner for the first week (if you don't live nearby you can order and pay online or over the phone and have it delivered), stop over and pick up the laundry and do it at your house, or if she wants you can do it there and take care of the baby while she naps. Again, if you don't live near by, pay for a cleaning service for a few weeks. And I agree with everyone else, diapers are a necessity and she'll need lots of them. There's also nothing wrong with sentimental gifts since this is your grandchild. Good luck!

Lots of super ideas given by others.

My all time favorite right now is at Lands' End. It's a 100% cotton convertible gown which converts to a play suit. The gown with elastic at the bottom is super for nightime changes - makes it really easy, and then during the day, it can be snapped up into a play suit...and it's 100% cotton. These look very well made. If I had a newborn right now, I would get 3 of them, as newborns tend to go through outfits quickly, and my children would probably "live" in them for the first few weeks. Maybe some socks for baby's feet would be nice too.

Enjoy your new grandbaby! I'm a mother of 5, and enjoyed the newborn stage so much! (And I used the thick cloth diapers and thick hand towels (Costco sells the white ones in bundles of 12) for burping. Nice and absorbent!

Oh, and I used hats on my babies all the time, especially at this time of year. Here's another link to a really nice quality 100% cotton hat and bib combination.

I can't tell you how much I would've LOVED getting diapers and wipes at my baby shower!! It also would have been nice to get some of those cloth diapers which are also great for spit-up! Spare pacifiers and tethers, cans of formula or nursing pads, a box of rice cereal (check the date to make sure it won't go bad for 4-6 months!), maybe even get her some things she'll need when the baby's older like spoons, sippies, or bowls. Everyone thinks of things a woman will need once the baby's born, but the baby needs more than the typical baby shower presents, which are usually for 0-6 months.

Strangely enough, the one thing I lacked after the shower was NEWBORN size sleepers and regular old socks. No one realizes that a baby starts out really little; before she can fit into the 3-6 mo clothes, she has to GROW first. Not to mention the 2 and 3 changes of clothes a day. I had to go out and buy 3 packages of 3 each of 0-3 sleepers and sleepgowns, cuz I was doing so much laundry!
And my son wore two pair of socks a day- one pair on his feet, and one on his hands to keep from scratching his face. And birdseye cloth diapers seemed to be a constant companion, even though I use disposables. I used them for burp cloths, washcloths, changing pads, etc. I still use them now- for wiping finger prints from windows!

Get clothes 3mo,6mo, 9 mo and 12 mo. They grow so quickly. Also a little red wagon will be nice once the baby starts sitting up.Of course, gift cards for diapers and things like that. Maybe even a few things for the mother. Maybe a massage or bath items and robe. Things like that. It may be a baby shower but we can't forget the mothers. Good Luck. Whatever you choose will be used sooner or later.

I think a portrait package (some places have great deals on a sitting every month or two for the first year) would be an absolute priceless gift. In a lot of cases it's not as expensive as it sounds. Just an idea. Good luck.

How about a spa day for the mum-to-be? Just call ahead and make sure the spa caters to pregnant women. You could also get her a gift certificate for a spa treatment for when after the baby is born and offer to care for the baby while she gets pampered.

Thinking of the future is a good idea also. A college fund, savings. Anybody can put money in the account at any time there for it's there when the child needs it for anything.
