How come my speedometer goes up to 160 and my car will do a top speed of 80 mph with a good wind behind it?

Nobody can handle make model year engine size etc.,etc. My only thought is , do you have a speedometer have a setting for Kilometers and MPH.??? If so check its setting.

because there are enough stupid people out there that believe every car will do whats on the speedometer so in effect it is a cheap way for manufactures to "BOOST" performance

Your engine could have a "governor" installed that will not allow it to go over the 80 mpg that you claim.
