Every night I have this mean raccoon that growls at me on my porch and then runs off. Should I stop leaving my garbage out?

I hear if you put coyote or fox urine around it scares them off. The question is where are you going to get urine from either of those animals. Lucky yours is only on your porch. I have them in my attic!

The goal here I assume is to not have to collect your trash each morning. First, look into getting a critter proof garbage can - it will cost you less then $20. Second, if that is to expensive, double bungy cord the top on and suspend it from it's handles so that it is not near a wall/post, and even when tipped does not touch the ground. This way, even if they get on it, their weight will dump them off - key here is good bungy cords and rope to suspend it. Third, if that is too much trouble, build a locking box, put the cans inside the house or garage, separate out the perishables and leave them in a dish for the animals. At the same time ensure you do not have cat/dog food on the porch, preferably NEVER but at the very minimum only for a few minutes in the morning. I am a wildlife rehabber who believes that teaching folks how to fix their wildlife problems is far more effective then being full of sick, injured and orphaned wildlife due to folks being frustrated and ending up doing stuff that harms the wildlife and doesn't solve the problem. If in fact none of these solutions work, please join the group below, it specializes in assisting folks with problem wildlife.

If you have pet food or anything else they would eat make sure not to have it on your porch. You can shoo them away but be careful they will rip you apart. I have them once in a while at night on mine, I just leave them alone and they're gone by morning

Yeah, they keep coming back for the food. I have a racoon and a possum that like to eat my outside cat's food, so I have to take it inside everynight else I have visitors.

Moth Balls answer is good. All vermin shy away/avoid the smell including rats, rabbits etc.
However, you must be careful that none of your other pets can get to them. If they eat them it will kill them. Same for any children.

Are you sure that's your porch? How do I know that you didn't evict the racoons?
