actually most have 4. It's because it is difficult to draw a 5 fingered hand in correct proportion, especially when you're drawing them thousands and thousands of times for just one episode. It's quicker to draw 4.

Some do some don't. Most cartoon characters I've seen have at least 4 fingers. Though I've seen 5 fingers in some too.

not all cartoon characters have 3 fingers some have 4. almost all anime characters have 5.

It allows the finger to appear thicker on the character..otherwise...more visible detail.

because they are drawn in that way? why do you observe anime's character's fingers when you're supposed to watch the story and read their conversation?

i think the real question is why do they call them fingers? i've never seen them fing.
