Everyone so far is right, it is comets since they can come from as far away as half a light year and nearly touch the Sun at their closest. Some hit the Sun. Shoemaker-Levy-9 hit Jupiter.

Comets -- come from far out in the Kuiper belt and in close to the sun.

Comets.
Some of them follow hyperbolic paths instead of elliptic ones and will never return.
