The past is our excuse, or explanation as to why we are who we are and how we got here. Plus...the good memories are a really great vacation when the present is not giving us a good day.

I had shock therapy for depression. I have lost almost all memories of my past. Memories tell you who you are, how to behave, what you eat, how to drive. Every thing you do is based on memories. Think about the job you do.

I have lived in the same town for the past 20 years. I now have to use a map to find my way around town. I no longer know how to cook. In fact when I go to the grocery store I am constantly in a state of confusion as I don't know what to buy. Think about this. When you go to the store to buy a loaf of bread, you probably have a pretty good idea of what brand you want. The bread you buy is based on a memory you have from a prior experience. If you don't have a memory of ever buying bread and are faced with 20 to 30 different types of bread how do you go about ruling out one brand from the other. How do you know you will like or not like something if you have no memory. Think about your job. If you went to work or school tomorrow and had no memory of ever going to work or school and no memory of what you do there, how would you function. Memories help you live your life. How would you get dressed tomorrow if you have no prior knowledge what to wear? How would you read a book, write a letter, talk with people if you can't remember the things you have learned. Memories are so important to who we are and how we function. Never take them lightly as they can be so easily taken away.

It's what makes us unique in the world. No one else has the same experiences in life that I do. Or as you do, or as anyone else here. We are special in our own little ways. And we are the only ones that can share our memories with someone if we decide to.

Because when there is nothing tangible left...memories are all we have.
They carry emotion.
They give us connection.
Glimpses of the past that can give you strength for today.

My memories of my grandpa keep me connected to him...because of my memories, my 2 children who never got to meet him, will know what a great man he was.

Thats why memories are so important to me.

I heard a quote once...

"People will forget what you did. People will forget what you said. But people will never forget how you made them feel."

Memories are very much like that... They provide a foundation of feelings. And we love that because they are a constant reminder that there WERE better times, worse times, etc...

Because they make us smile, they make us laugh....they remind us of the 'Good Times'.....and sometimes they're happier than the present. They shape us into who we are, for good or bad.

So many people ask "What would you change?" Well, I wouldn't change a thing, because without the things I have memories of, I wouldn't be me :)

Our time spent here isn't long at all. While we are living it, we tend to rush from one thing to another and wish our lives away. After we get older, we look back and try to recreate the time.
