Got any excess coffee cups/mugs that you don't like?
A perfect time to dump them. Put all in a box with bubble wrap or newspaper to keep them quiet.

White Elephants should be those gifts that you just don't want but can't get rid of either. Some examples would be the statue with a clock in its belly or the leg lamp from The Christmas Story. But is should also be something that potentially someone would actually want and it should be unused. The problem with your idea is that you could potentially offend your sister-in-law if she expected you to keep it. But if not and the picture is well done and framed well then okay but if its a paint-by-numbers then its just some junk. Impersonal gifts are best, but it really depends on your work and how much you were expected to spend. If the spending amount is $5 then your suggestions are fine, but remember that people will potentially spend the amount and expect to get something decent or at least regiftable in return. Got any unopened stationary sets? How about an unopened movie or CD? Look around for something you bought but never used and have no idea as to why you bought it in the first place. That would be a good example of a white elephant. In the original story, the white elephant was a gracious gift, only the receipient went broke trying to support it.

The actual meaning goes back to India. A white elephant was a good luck sign. A white elephant was a sign of wealth and power and influence. A white elephant could only be afforded by wealthy people. Let's just say, you know someone of limited means that you don't like very much. You have access to a white elephant. You give this person the white elephant as a gift. The person cannot refuse such a wonderful gift. This person will go broke taking care of such a wonderful gift.
It is basically a good gift on the surface that will end up costing you more than it is worth.

They are meant to be fun parties. Depending on what kind of personalities you work with, any kind of gag gift is great. The way we do it is that every person brings a gift, so I usually suggest that if you are bringing a date that you bring a really good gag gift for one of you and then something that's useable/likeable for the other person. If you are going stag, then I think whatever you think is funny will do. We usually end up with one or two gifts that everyone likes to fight over, which is half the fun! The rest of them are usually gags or are just something that is hiddeous to you that has been a gift in the past! Have fun with it!!

I think it supposed to be something you have laying around and don't want. I gave a peeps maker last year that I got as a gag gift (I hate peeps) a mother ended up getting it and liked it. My dad did one this year. He gave a light up fishing lure and a taklebox with candy fish & chocolate lures in it. He recieved a universal remore that the previous owner couldn't figure out how to use. A painting someone made for you could be a bad idea because it could offend the painter. Any old candles or nick-nacks laying around?

A white elephant gift party sounds like fun!!
It means something gaudy/loud. For example a velvet Elvis painting...you know stuff you'd find at a garage sale.

White elephant is a reference to the reverance the people in India have for their God, who resembles an elephant.
However, elephants are very hard to care for, but out of respect for their god, if you are given an elephant, you must care for it.
SO you would then after some time "give" it to someone else.

Download a picture of a political character that your staff hates, then impose your picture and the politiions picture together. Put it in a nice frame.
