Vanguard, in general, is an excellent fund company specializing in Index funds( which by the way will yield you a better return on average than actively managed funds). If your 401K offers it you should consider investing in it for your bond portion of your portfolio. If you 401K offers VTSMX(Vanguard Total Stock Market Index) you should invest in that for your equity portion of your portfolio. If you young you can take more risk and invest more weight into the stock market index and less to the bond index. If you are older you will weight more towards the bond index.

in case your decision is between those 2, choose the total marketplace index--it truly is extra varied and includes small cap stocks (which have a more effective go back by the years). even with the undeniable fact that, I somewhat have a forefront IRA and did huge analyze and wondering before I chosen money. i love the objective Retirement 2045 (or they have 2050 now too i imagine) because it includes global stocks and bonds and adjusts allocation with out delay as I age. I also somewhat like the LifeStrategy boom fund that's similiar yet doesn't replace allocation by the years. The rate ratios are a touch more effective, yet you save by no longer having to open 3-4 different money to fulfill all of your needs (each and each and every index fund will fee $10/12 months till you've over $10,000 in each and each and every of them). Plus you get the further diversification of bonds and global and sector money.
