Britain can lay claim to the top man of the arts of all time (Shakespeare), the top physicist (Isaac Newton), the top biologist (Charles Darwin), the top economist (Adam Smith), the world's most prestigious university (Oxford), biggest band (Beatles), the world's second-biggest band (the Stones - in fact, somethiing like 10 of the world's biggest 15 are British); and we're still kicking *** today - inventing the world wide web (google Sir Tim Berners-Lee), inventing cloning (Dolly the Sheep, 1991)....oh and we created the world's only global empire and language. We rock. Oh, just one more sentence to amaze Anglophiles and scare Anglophobes: Britain is the same size as Wyoming.

close but no cigar! The scots invented the modern world. Most of the people you mentioned owe their genius to a scottish ancestry. We colonised N. america and inspired the declaration of independence, and gave the Americans their first presidents. We colonised the rest of the world too from pole to pole. In fact scottish traders travelled the ' Silk Route' to china as long ago as 2000BC. Here's tae us, wha's like us? damn few!

I like your style Rage997. People tend to forget these things these days because they think history etc is not important. Many people all over the world will not realise what they owe to this country. Three important things you missed out is our Modern Democracy which has been widely imitated, our Laws (again widely imitated), and Sport (cricket, rugby, football etc - we may not be very good at these but that's not the point). If you add these to your list it will make the rest of the world feel very inadequate. The British people are a phenomenon and my only surprise was that Jesus was not born here. Happy Christmas to all.

One could argue that if it wasn't for the Nordic tribes from the North and the Anglo Saxons from the south we may still be painting ourselves blue and offering sacrifices at stone henge.
Oh. Then in 1066 the French came over to show us a thing or two, a lot of these people may be decedents of them.
As for our language, it did not exist in its present form much before 1300. Our funny spelling comes because old English comes from Friesland Dutch. It is easier to understand old English if you are Dutch than if you are English, of course then it was mixed with French. As for the word colour well that is the way it was spelt first. Then again probably it was originally couleur as in French and we changed it.

I am proud to be British. I always say we are the least worse country in the world.

Contrary to what one answerer said, we don't shout about our achievements. We're a pretty modest race. Of course, we aren't as great and powerful as we were, but we are still a haven of decency and democracy in a chaotic world.

By the way, we'll spell colour the way we want to, after all it is OUR language.

Well it is al very impressive but first thing to point out is that they are British achievments not English ,second thing to say is that the our biggest attribute is that we don't gloat about our previous success ,that's what makes us British otherwise we would just be like the French or Americans .

Yeah, and you wouldn't be sat at a computer were it not for Alan Turing, wouldn't have phoned someone without Alexander Graham Bell, and wouldn't have a TV without William Crookes or John Logie Baird.
