When they become regular and predictable, it's time to go get checked out at the hospital if you're already at 40 wks. You have time though. If they're still 20 min's apart, you're probably going into labor. Congratulations! But they will eventually get to where they're one on top of the other in hard transitional labor. Unless you're like me, you probably have some time. If your water breaks, go immediately to the hospital and try not to sit or stand up. That could risk a prolapsed cord. But start packing your bags, load the car, take a good shower- because it's going to get yucky and you won't get a really good one for a couple of days, and go on to the hospital. Don't eat. It tends to come back up.

Happy Birthday!

They will get closer together, harder and longer as your labor progressed. They can be up to 90 seconds long, and eventually will be only minutes apart. It sounds awful, but think of it as a good thing. The worse it hurts, the closer to being finished you are. And all the pain is worth it once you see your baby. It's a small price to pay for that kind of gift. Good Luck and Congrats!!

i wouldn't worry too much until you can feel a pattern. you're probably just in early labor, and you may have a ways to go. if i were you i would contact your ob and let them know that you've started contractions. let them know if you've broken your water, and i'm sure they'll just say to keep an eye on the contractions. i think the magic number is one every 5 minutes that lasts for about a minute each.
good luck!
