Basically im trying to take an informal poll to see what people think about female police officers. I'm thinking of switching my major from nursing to criminal justice. I'm aware that some people hold a misconception that female officers are butch/lesbians.
..........Also, Perhaps this should be a seperate question; but for anyone out there with knowledge of both professions; would it be advisable to become a paramedic or a cop. Both are appealing, so personality is not a factor. In terms of pay, advancement etc, which is the better move?
Thanks in advance.

I think female cops have to be more aggressive and work twice as hard to get the same job done and recognition as a male cop which makes them come off as BUTHC. Traditional society and history shows us that women are more emotional, needing to be taken care of by a man and this is when the red boots & cape come out so a guy can be a hero. As much as a guy dislikes a woman in a certain role given the circumstnace he will play the big, might hereo (That's wired into a man). However, as society changes and taboos in the workforce are erased things do become much better.
In my opinion, you are essentially choosing to help people in either profession. It appears that you would enjoy doing either job but I must admit you will more than likely find the same esoteric practices in both professions. Which are you mentally better suited for: taking an oath to uphold the law where you have a real chance of taking someone's live (rare but real) or taking an oath to give a good faith effort to save lives no matter the reason? There are many resources to get you facts: BestJobsUSA.com, BestPlaces.net and others. Choose the career that will challenge you in every facett of life and most importantly keep you happy.

I respect cops and paramedics. Personally I would prefer to be a paramedic...regardless of gender issues. However, if your motivation is pay and advancement, being a police officer maybe a better route. Paramedics are either EMTs or full paramedics....there's not much advancement from that (from what I know). I work at a hospital and meet a lot of cops AND paramedics when they come through the ER. And both jobs can be dangerous...but they are both very honorable and complex jobs.
I say stay in nursing school...much better job outlook, demand and pay. Plus, if you need your adrenaline rush you can always try to become a trauma nurse, ER nurse or a flight nurse (those that ride in helicopters to rescue sites and help air-evac critical patients). Many more options...and think about when you get older...nursing will offer you more options then as well.

I work with police officers and both EMTs.
Both jobs are admirable and seriously they are so different. You really have to look at the requirements for both jobs and find out which one you think you can do and tolerate because you have to love it if you expect to stay and have a future in those careers.

Pay wise: though both don't get paid the best salary cops get paid way more than EMTs. They really don't get paid ANYTHING. I work part-time and am in college and I get paid more than my full-time EMT friend.

Stress-wise: they both have their own kind of stresses and are both dangerous though of course cops actually go head first into some dangerous situations at times.

Statistically cops have a 75% of divorce. It's system is by seniority. The new guys get the crap shifts and never see their family. While their kids are awake you have to sleep then wake up at night to go to work. Then when you finally have some years down you get promoted and are considered a "newbie" in your new rank and get the crap shift all over again. It's a cycle. Even so the personal cops I know lead happy marital lives.

You face a greater stigma being a police officer from the public who might view you as power hungry or corrupted.

With that all said and done really you have to figure out for yourself which job procedures you enjoy more. I personally would rather be a police officer (as I am trying to be) but it may not suit you PERSONALLY.

Seems that to be a paramedic/EMT you had better be able to lift as well as a guy. I would expect that this will be a primary part of your job, lifting. The same is true for a nurse, though less weight. Men have upper body strength; women have lower body strength. Any job description for a nurse will say something like '25 pounds frequently, and 50 pounds occasionally.' Neither are true. When was the last time you found a patient that really weighed 50 pounds? Don't ever expect to have enough help to lift the ones that are 300-400 pounds. It is unfortunate, but your height will kill this idea for you. A woman can lift a lot, but never get as good as the guys about weight lifting.

I think that the stereotype that all women cops are lesbian/butches.
Though I think that some people may not treat the potentially cute girl in uniform the same as the big 230 pound man-cop.

In my opinion, becoming a paramedic might be a good idea because frankly, it's a less dangerous job and I am assuming that since it is in the medical profession, the pay should be higher. Also, it might appeal to injured people better when they have a nice female that is taking care of them as opposed to being taken care of by a guy who is only doing the job to make money.

As far as advancement goes.. I'm not sure. Sorry.

Police officers are needed but Paramedics are needed more. Both save lives. Being a cop is quite dangerous, especially for a woman because of the reflex requirement. Paramedics saved my life twice in 19 months. Guess it's a matter of you wanting to use your brain or your brawn. Both professions are admirable. How's your nerves?

Nursing school to medic school is really just a lateral shift. You'll still be in the medical field with a very comparable level of training, but you'll be providing more of an emergency, field level of care as opposed to a longer term, more supportive level of care. I'm a medic. I considered both nursing school and medic school. They were about the same length and cost and difficulty. I decided that being a medic was more appealing to me.

I don't really harbor any ideas about a police offer based on their sex. In the field, I couldn't care less if the officer is male or female. So long as they do their job and do it well, I just don't care.

I have found that almost every female cop I have dealt with has something to prove and lets their power go straight to their heads. But this isn't the case every time. My brother is a cop and says that the female cops always are the last to show, even if they are the closest and free. As long as you don't abuse the power and hesitate you should be fine as a cop. Just learn how to shoot worth a darn. I worked at a range where the local cops practiced, and the women couldn't handle their weapons. So learn to shoot too.

I'm in the application process to become a cop. Basically, you gotta like the job and forget about the rumors that people pass around. I know a lot of nice female officers who are married and with kids, they're just women doing their job.

As for the paramedic job, its good for you if you want less action

well, u get more if ur a doc, so im guessing Paramedics are better. but female paramedics would be a bit better cuz females tend to have a more caring character than guys (no offense to guys. im not saying there arent any caring guys just the minority are caring ppl)
