Mine is an old church that my parents bought many years ago. It has a red glow within, lighting up the church windows . I imagined so much about that church and the "people in it". As a child I always knew Christmas could start when this was brought out. It plays "Silent Night" if you wind it up.

All of my Ornaments are "Oldies but Goodies" -- some from my own parents' childhood (including handmade ones) ... some from our (my siblings' and my own childhoods), and lots from the various places I've been stationed while on Active Duty with the US Armed Forces over the many years ...

Now a Military Retiree -- I like to pick a few each year -- and mix them up -- some of them are related to the Military Duty at the time (after all, how many have Aircraft with Christmas messages on them or Santa riding a Tank), some are from faraway places (like the ones I got from the Black Forest in Germany), some are from battlefields and historic sites I've Visited (like remembrances of the WWII memorials), and some ... well, given that my parents did survive the Great Depression -- these are the most precious of them all.

So each year -- several come out .. and then are carefully wrapped for the next Christmas.

First, DGR challenged us to make Christmas better--we can all do little or large things. However, having old Christmas memories are important. For the first time in six Christmasses I brought out the old decorations we used when my mum was alive.
Looking at each one put on the tree ment so much to me. Then I found the three little Christmas Teddy bears I do not know where they came from, but in red and green they were all there to greet me.
I relate strongly to those who say their old decorations, bring back memories, the very things that make us the people we are.
Yes, on to the future, on to better Christmasses, but I say: let us hold on to those old decorations memories, and in the moment, be thankful for all there is.
Alas, I have written a book.
Charles "That Cheeky Lad"
And as I have said on other postings....
...A Wicked Happy Christmas to everyone!
Peace and prosperity to all!

I have many old favourites, but one particular one is the 'fairy' that i put on top of my first Christmas tree when i was first married and had a home of my own. We couldnt afford a big tree or many decorations, but i made some and my sister gave me some of hers, and bought this 'fairy' and put it at the top. It has a plastic but pretty doll's face, some little gold coloured cardboard wings and the rest of it is just like a wisp of swansdown! After 30 years it is a bit battered looking, but for old times sake still very sweet!

Ah we are a sentimental lot aren't we?

I have a set of painted plastic ornaments, painted shiney, I brought home from the parents house after Dad died. I remember when they were shiney and new.. There are choir boys, angels, and reindeers. They are getting tarnished with age. I also have my parents tree topper, it is blown glass, and is faded to a pinky red now. Too bad, I see them in the stores, for big bucks. Wish I could use it on my tree, have low ceilings, and a tall tree.
I have a tiny little plastic house with a tiny Santa in it, and there is a piece of red celophane at the back, for the lights of the tree to shine through to illuminate the scene. It probably cost a quarter, if that. We think it came from Girl Scouts, a gift for our parents.
Merry Christmas!

Shut up about decorations! My Christmas starts when I start buying presents for people. Decorations are just a pain in the ars£. Scavenging for gifts for loved ones and liked ones is clearly far more fulfilling than decorating your house. Stop being selfish and think about how you can make Christmas better, not just keeping it the same. Help a few homeless with a bit of cash, then put real thought into your family's presents. So on Christmas day they get a windfall, due to your considerate nature. Also by a couple of presents for people who don't expect them. Add something to the ritual.

Silent Night is my favorite Christmas song.
We have an antique Santa Claus ornament, that we have put on the tree for as long as I can remember. I inherited it kept up the old tradition.
Our town puts up a three bell ornament at the center of town. Each bell lights up. It used to ring as each bell lit up. It's old, and has faded over time. I think it's been there forever.

I have 3 favorite pieces:

1) a bell older at least 54 years old - used to ring that the Christkindl had arrived. I grew up not with Santa but with the Austrian tradition that the Christkindl (Christ Child) bringing gifts to children who were good...good comes to good.

2) a Christmas pickle - Austrian/German tradition were a pickle ornament is hidden in the tree. The first child who finds it gets a special gift.

3) a Hummel figurine of the Infant Jesus that my mom gave me before she died.

Growing up my parents had this silver ball that made bird chirping sounds. As a child I would spend hours looking for that darn bird in the tree!! I hated that annoying ball. Mom passed away 2 yrs ago, and I have no idea where it ended up. Sure wish I still had it, or could find one like it.
