yes, this has been done in the south african basketball association (saba) in the year 1997. however this only lasted a year as the commissioner, mazbak atilao, decided that crocodiles would do a much better job as opposed to zebras. thus from 98 to 2006 (the present) crocs rule the whistle in the saba.

Contrary to what you may believe, NBA referees are the best officials in the US. They constantly review the rules, officiating mechanics, and video tape of previous games. In fact, most NBA referees watch more game tape than the teams do. After every game, they must review game tape with assignors and defend their calls. When you see a questionable call, you can be sure that the official making the call will be talking with his/her assignor after the game, explaining why he/she made his/her decision. Referees are also quizzed throughout the season on basketball rules.

The fact is, the referees are the only ones in the game who truly know the rules. Commentators barely have a grasp on the basics, yet they pretend to be authorities on the rules. Unfortunately, fans take the word of the commentators on rules interpretations.

The next time you see a referee "miss" a call, take a moment to consider that maybe YOU are the one who doesn't know the rules.
