Generally you'll find the following gouramis
Dwarf- Cute, peaceful (strangely they will fight each other a bit), won't get very big, not very hardy
Pearl- Peaceful, grow fairly large, very hardy
3 spot- Called all sort of names based on color, they all have 2 spots (eye is the 3rd spot), moderately aggressive, and get relatively big.
Paradise- Fairly aggressive, adult males will rarely put up with another male, females are less aggressive.
Kissing- Fairly aggressive, kissing is male on male and is used to determine dominance, like more veggies in their diet than most gourami.

Well I like the Blue Gouramis, there are a lot of varieties of this species like the Opaline Gourami, Gold Gourami, Platinum Gourami, Lavender Gourami and Cosby Gourami.
They are all subspecies of the Blue Gourami and they have labyrinth organs to help breathe air just like Betta!!

It mostly depends on two things, 1) where the store is located - some places have more dificulty finding or transporting new fish to their location.
2) What the store has in stock - this is usually all of the common gouramis. Good luck with the tank.

just be careful mixing gouramis.. They're actually pretty aggressive... It's a tough thing. You'd have to see their individually personalities. I wouldn't recommend a gourami tank... You'll wind up with a lot dead. Just be prepared to have a lot of tanks running at the same time to separate the attackers if you're going with a gourami tank.

Petstores usually carry gold, blue, opaline, pearl, kissing, snakeskin, and giant gouramis. Dwarf honey gouramis are pretty common too.

I think it really depends on what they have in stock at the time. Sometimes they will bring in new fish, for a limited amount of time. The best bet is to give the store a call, and ask what's available.
