Agreed. Why did he go from playing boring pop rock to boring blues rock anyway, it didn't make him any cooler.

John Mayer is not a dave matthews rip off. His earlier songs have a DMB feel because they are both written in similar time signatures and chord shapes on the acoustic guitar, but aside from that they are very different. In addition, John Mayer has become a bluesman with guitar chops, and is revered by Buddy Guy and Eric Clapton as the greatest guitarist of his generation. He is an excellent songwriter, and has definitely found his own style of soul/blues/pop. It is only his first album that sounds remotely like DMB, although DMB is also extremely different, given the types of songs they write and the instrumentation used. OAR is a rip off of DMB.

Different styles. John does a lot more finger picking, Dave is just a straight up rhythm chord player in his band. Besides the fact that they both primarily play acoustic guitars, no.. not even close.
