I have ridden motorcycles for many years. I started with a scooter and would advise you to do the same. They have automatic transmissions so there is one less thing to pay attention to. They are light enough to keep from tipping over if you misstep when walking backwards out of a parking spot. And the 125's they are making now are faster than they used to be.

You may not be able to find a 100cc (most new engines are 50cc, 125cc, 250cc or 600cc). The smallest engines get ridiculously high gas mileage (up to 100 mpg), but don't go very fast. And you do what to go fast enough to get out of the gutter or make a left turn in an intersection. I would recommend that you start out with a 125cc. You can't take it on the freeway; but on most streets, it will work just fine.

I personally wish everyone had to ride a scooter for a year before they were allowed to drive a car. Many people would never move up to a car because the scooter meets their needs. And those who drove cars would know to look for us two-wheelers. Until that happens, be careful out there.

pro's: great on gas, lightweight, very manuverable, cheaper to insure, can get into very tight spots, automatic transmission.

cons: speed is maxed out to 45 mph...or slower. not suitable to carry 2-up, very small tires makes the bike very tricky to handle at slow speeds, different brake levers; 1 lever controls the back brake, the other controls the front brake instead of 1 lever being the clutch. with the slow speed, u could only ride on 2 lane roads...not the 55mph freeway legally.

even tho their scooters, the law equates them as motorcycles, and u do need a motorcycle endorsement if u plan to ride at night or ride 2-up. if a scooter is ur bag, i suggest the 'big boys' of the scooter class. 1 is the honda silverwing, the other is the suzuki bergman. at least these 2 scoots have enough punch to hang at interstate speeds with the looks of a scooter. as with all 2 wheelers, our small size can be our undoing. u must always have good situational awarness...being able to keep track of what's going on around u in a 360 degree arc. word to the wise: if u cant see them, they definately cant see u. always ride where u can see whats coming in traffic, always leave a way out.
at stop lights, keep a close eye on the mirrors and a open space in front of u. if the incoming car doesnt appear to be about to stop, get the hell outta dodge before u become a pancake. split the lane and let the car ahead take the hit; gettin rammed from behind on a bike isnt a pretty sight.
coming up on intersections: watch their wheels. if they start to roll, cover the clutch and brakes and be prepared for evasive action if the cager has a brain fart. just cause their looking at u dont mean they can see u. a pencil held up at arm's length can hide even a big harley ultra classic dresser.

Scooters are becoming cool, in the US , as they have been in Italy and Spain for decades.
If you live in the US, I'd suggest you buy a scooter with a larger, more powerful engine. One important consideration when looking for a two-wheel vehicle is its ability to get out of the way of trouble.

They're encomical and fun.

There are to many variables that you left out of the question for anyone but me to answer.Just about every state now wants you to have a motorcycle license. My advice is to sign up for a course to get your license and talk to ALL the people taking the course and above all else tell the instructor why you want to ride.It may cost you a couple of hundred dollars ,but could save you the cost of the bike or your life What you want to buy will be dictated by what you want to do.

One of the good things about a scooter is they save gas and are easy to handle because most of or all of the controls are hand controls.
They don't look real cool but if you are not worried about that then go for it. I know if I could I would get one.

I see nothing but bad about owning a scooter. As far as I'm concerned when you get the thing...go have a tattoo artist put "NERD" on your forehead!!!

I own Hondas- I progressed thru 2 80cc's, 1-150cc and am preparing a 250cc for next spring.
First: size matters! 50cc's are useless, 80cc's are good only on city streets and boulevards, but are excellent for students and for grocery-gitters. 150cc's make you capable of staying up with traffic and fun trips in hilly residential areas, but 10" wheels in all cases make for choppy rides. 250cc's have larger wheels, smoother rides and enough mojo to make you respectable in the eyes of the H-D elitists.

To all people who say libby wasn't given amnesty, seek for the definition. it relatively is precisely what he became given whilst his penitentiary sentence became commuted. there is easily no difference. Republicans help amnesty for a traitor to the country, yet no longer no longer ordinary working immigrants attempting to furnish their families a extra useful life. They run on a platform of being reliable on national protection. by making use of helping the leaking of CIA brokers names, who artwork for this united states of america? in simple terms by using fact they disagree with the administration. i will agree that Libby became the fall guy, and that Rove and Cheney ought to have been charged with treason (it relatively is particularly what they are to blame of), however the very fact of the project is Libby obstructed justice. And he obstructed justice to a lots extra effective degree than Clinton did whilst he became IMPEACHED!!!! Clinton lied a pair of *******, he did no longer conceal up information on who leaked CIA information..
