Cool was a word started in the early 20th Century. It comes from the saying "he's in the cooler" meaning "he's in jail." Roughnecks were thrown into the local jail to cool down after a night of drinking, fighting, and flirting. That's why troublemarkers are considered cool.This word caught on with the jazz crowd in New Orleans, then it caught on with the New York literary crowd, specifically F. Scott Fitzgerald who used the word often in his classic novel "the Great Gatsby." That was 80 years ago, and the slang word is still used today. Popular means someone is accepted. Has nothing to do with cool. Unless someone is popular in jail.

Popular means liked by a lot of people.
Cool means different things.
Remaining calm in the face of adversity.
Being self assured, but not conceited.
Not caring what other people think of you.
Having your own sense of style that is not reliant on trends.
Having good taste.
Taking life as it comes.

Popular means that you are at the top od the social latter. Cool is like mellow or calm and of couse they are also at the top of the social latter.

it's some stupid thing that people use to place other people in groups and "popular might be where your known but just being youself is better than tring to be someone you're not. (just keep that in mind)
