because ob's are specialized, i understand your question, but most, if not all, insurance companies willapprove an ob without a referal because it's a doc women see as preventative medicine, with their yearly visit and pap. if you're pregnant, let your insurance company know, and find out which ob's are covered under your plan and then pick one. many family docs can recommend one if you don't know of one in your area, but the ob will take you without a referal from your family doc.

It depends on your insurance company. Some want you to be referred and others just let you see any doctor. Call your insurance company and ask if you need a referral or not. Also ask you doctor (if you need to be referred) if they can recommand a few, so you can go see a couple of doctors and choose the one you feel is best for you.

You can and you don't need any referral. If you are not satisfied with the first one, can go a second opinion with another OB. They are waiting for the consultancy services to you, but will charge you every time too.

You can just go see one. If you have an HMO, check first but most of them do not require a referral for OB/gynecology.
