why would it be?

It's not rude to say Merry Christmas as a friendly festive greeting.

Unfortunately there are a lot of people who say Merry Christmas in a defensive, mean-spirited way to attempt to provoke a response so that they can complain that they are being persecuted (for instance those who respond to a Happy Holidays with a belligerent Merry Christmas). I've seen too many people recently who seem to deliberately try and offend people with Merry Christmas, just to see if they can. It's sad really.

Say what you like, keep it friendly, and we'll all have a happy holiday season all round!

Merry Christmas to you!

No. Not rude in the USA any way. Maybe it is in other countries where Christmas is not recognized or celebrated. I know many claim it is rude even here in the USA where it is a national religious holiday. And the biggest celebrated holiday of the year. Most people who celebrate the holiday as a non-religious holiday, will usually say.... "Happy Holidays". Which is fine, and I don't consider rude either. Since I am a Christian and celebrate Christmas as the birth of our Lord Jesus. I prefer to say Merry Christmas. And don't feel I am being rude by saying.... "I hope each of you will have a Very Merry Christmas". :-)

Little explanation and my answer is No. It is not rude. We don't know who many strangers are. Many of us greet all types of people. Sorry if some are offended. We can't read minds and know others religions. There is one religion who does not recognize Christmas. I wonder if someone would say Merry Christmas, what the response would be ? We need to respect all Religions, but how do we know who they are ??

Just as I say Merry Christmas to someone to express the happiness of the season to them, I would not be at all offended if they responded by telling me Happy Holidays, Happy Kwanza, or whatever.
If someone tells you Merry Christmas, and you don't celebrate Christmas just respond in kind...
good day to you too...
You don't have to make it a cultural clash, and I promise I won't get offended if someone says
"Happy Whatever" The importance is not on the words, but on the spirit in which they are spoken.

May everyone enjoy their holidays, and have Peace on Earth!

No, Merry Christmas! That's what this whole country is based on, Christmas, not some silly Xmas and Happy Holiday stuff. Merry Christmas!! Even Scrooge said it and he can't be wrong!

There aren't many people who still celebrate Christman as a religious holiday- mostly it's about presents nowadays. So, saying "Merry Christmas" has lost most of it's religious connotation.

Being that it is a day set aside for the BIRTH of JESUS CHRIST, I think the least that people can do is to use HIS name "CHRIST" in the greetings.( Merry CHRISTmas )
The change here comes from those that do not care about the real meaning of Christmas.
Most people call us by our name on our birthday. They put our name on the cards that are given to us. Even on the birthday cake that is given to us, usually our name appears on it. When the birthday song is sung to us, our name is used Happy Birthday dear .......

I think that it is only appropiate to say "MERRY CHRISTMAS"

No, you don't actually have to celebrate Christmas to be happy on Christmas, plus Christmas is the most awesome holiday ever, you get presents, AND it celebrates the birth of the most awesome holydude that ever lived...Jesus. Who wouldn't be merry on Christmas?

It is fine if you know that the person you are speaking to is Christian. I am Jewish and will sometimes wish my Christian friends a "Merry Christmas", but I find it very offensive if someone wishes me a "Merry Christmas".
