Deadly Ascension uses a 5 string bass, I should know...I'm the bassist. I used to play a 4 string, but found the 5 to give me a wider variety of notes to play. Also I like the fact I have the B, which on the four I had to downtune.

It gives a basist a greater range of sounds. With the standard 4 string bass one is "limited" to G D A E strings, and sounds they can produce (in standard tuning). With an extra C or B string (depending on tuning), they get additional low end sounds.
