You really can't. If there's a way out, there will always be a way in.
But you can certainly limit the attacks.
1. Install an anti-virus software.
2. Protect your PC with a Firewall.
3. Make sure you also run updates on your operating system.
4. Secure your wireless network if you use one.

Good luck :)

Try these...
1) If you're running windows, ensure that you have the latest Windows Updates (Start > All Programs > Windows Update). You can also configure your PC to automatically download and install updates. (Right-click on My Computers > Properties > Automatic Updates tab > select the Automatic Option)

2) Enable Windows Firewall if you're using XP SP2.

3) Install ZoneAlarm firewall. AVG Free AntiVirus software, and Spybot....all these are free and effective. See the links below for locations

4) Buy a hardware firewall...there are several routers out there that will do this for you. Make sure all computers in your home connect to the router, then connect the router to the outside world. BE SURE TO CHANGE THE ROUTER'S DEFAULT PASSWORD TO SOMETHING VERY VERY STRONG (sorry for the caps, but this is very important). If you have a wireless network, be sure to encrypt your connection.

5) Lastly, create strong/complex passwords and change it frequently.
