Filing for a patent isn't that expensive, especially if you have a unique invention and do the majority of work yourself. Without Patent protection, you better have a good confidentiality agreement in place to try to protect yourself. You should not disclose the invention to anyone without a CDA in place in case you decide to Patent it. Go to USPTO.gov before you decide it's too expensive.

You can also file for a provisional patent via the gov. patent sites. This is very easy, the paper work is small, and the approval time is overnight. It gives you a year to file for the real deal. Just note that if you don't file for the real deal for a year it is public domain.
