I'm guessing that the first astronaut of obviously Irish descent was James McDivitt.

Tom Higgins will be.

"IN LATE 2007 or early 2008 Virgin Galactic, part of the Virgin group of companies, owned by Sir Richard Branson, will launch the world’s first commercial spaceline, with regular flights carrying fare-paying passengers into space.

The first Irishman to venture into space on board Virgin’s first ship, VSS Enterprise, will be Tom Higgins, boss of Realm Communications Ltd., which runs the Irish Psychics Live telephone service. Tom was first to register for the flight and signed a contract in February 2005 with Virgin Galactic to become Ireland’s first astronaut and space tourist."

Since Ireland doesn't have a space program, I don't think anybody born in Ireland has been to space. However, some of the NASA astronauts could have had great great grandparaents who emmigrated from Ireland to America.

John Patrick Mahoney in 1761 was walking drunk outside the town of Kilane when he was abducted by the Krylor. They were so grossed out by his behavior that they were just going to eject him into space until he started wailing like a Banshee. The scout ship went out of control and crashed just two miles from his home. He survived unscratched, unlike the Krylor, who lived long enough to warn their invasion fleet to abort the attack due to the "secret" sound weapon each human seemed to possess. He boiled their bodies and sold them as Leprechaun skeletons to some English nobleman for the price of a jug of whiskey.
