I call them black too. If they correct me by saying "I'm African American," I will politely ask what country in Africa they were born in. That usually shuts him/her up.

Ask Malcolm X. He said, "Twenty-two million African Americans - that's what we are - Africans who are in America." He thought it better defined the history and culture than any other term. So far, it doesn't seem like any particular white person with power has decided to start a movement where we call ourselves 'European American' all the time.

Ask the government. The government of the USA has called blacks: ******, colored people, mulatto's, quadroons, freed-colored people, and everything else in-between. You want to guess what white people have been considered throughout all those name changes for "African-Americans", um they have been considered American. The idiots on capital hill have found yet a new name for us which is African American. African American is just the political correct term for black, *****, colored people, mulatto, foreign black person, and for whoever else is black. Isn't it funny that a South African white can come to America and is considered a American or white? But a Jamaican, Haitian, or black West Indian can come over and all of the sudden their "African American"?

I think black people whose families have been here that long can call themselves whatever they want. But I call myself African American because my parents are immigrants. They came to America from Ghana, via England. So that term is still relevent to immigrant blacks.

Because both camps dont want the term "American". There are blacks that prefer African American, emphasizing their African roots, but there are whites that dont want them labeled as "pure bred Americans". Yeah this country is fuked up.

There is no reason for anyone, blacks included, to ever need to lose a cultural heritage. I am third generation American born but I always pencil in and refer to myself as German Amercian.
Just do it.
And let others do the same.
