Overall you will get better service and products by going to Lowe's, the Depot is more of a Contractors store, even thought they are trying to change their image. Lowe's also has a larger variety of products for inside and outside the home. Appliances, home decor, blinds, flooring of all kinds, plumbing and electrical in both rough and fashion, lumber, in and outdoors plants, building materials, outdoor power equipment, hand and power tools, all hardware, keys and locks, cabinets, furniture, doors, garage doors, windows, and more .... answer your question?

If I had to choose between the two -- I'd go with Lowes over Home Depot. I find that the Lowes associates are friendlier and more knowledgeable than those at Home Depot. I can't count the number of times I've asked for something specific in Home Depot and was met with a blank stare, or "I don't know.".

Overall for hardware stores -- my top preference is Ace Hardware. They might be a little more expensive, but they have an excellent product selection, and high quality merchandise. The people working at Ace Hardware are hands-down the most knowledgeable.

LOWE'S is my choice.
HOMO-DEPOT has its problems I once went with a friend to buy some assorted stuff. We got there just as the store was opening and the night shift didn't clean-up and there was Plastic Tie Down Straps on the floor and I watched a Homo-D. personnel trip over the strap and almost fall look back at it and continue walking. then a 45 or so woman did the same thing a few seconds later and i laughed as i walked by the strap i turned around to tell my friend and he tripped. As i approached the Homo-D i said to him that he was doing a great job at customer safety and he said "I didn't put it there". It was still there almost an hour later as well as plastic wrap and cardboard boxes and a barrier to prevent customers from going down an Isle that i had to asked to have removed to gain access.

Home Depot is a better contractors store, where Lowes is more marketed towards consumers.

I would have to say Lowe's, because just recently Home Depot was ranked 4th worst customer service in the U.S., according to CNN
