Thursday Next series by Fforde - Need to start at beginning?

I started the Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde in the middle. I read the second book recently and I'm currently reading the third. I'm trying to interest my husband in this series. Should he start at the beginning or should I just give him the third book when I'm done with it.

It's a little confusing if you don't start at the beginning.
