Apparently there are more health risks if you don't breastfeed at all than if you do breastfeed while smoking! Breast milk is still best for your baby.
congrats on getting down to 4 a day, most likely your baby is not getting any nicotene if you smoke so few.
BUT you've come this far, you should be able to go down to 3, then 2, and then 1 ciggie, and then none!!! You can do it!!! Just don't smoke inside around the baby, (I'm sure you don't).
Good on you for breastfeeding bubs! enjoy the boobs!

Inhalation of cigarette smoke passes to the baby easily and it takes approx 2 hours to completely disperse therefore when you have a cigarette, even half one, your breastmilk is capable of passing nicotine to the baby for up to 2 hours after the last cigarette.

Nicotine is poisonous to an infant and gradually the baby will begin to display signs of ingestion by either fussing during feeding due to the taste, or refusing totally. Vomiting can occur as well as cramping.

It is far better to go through some withdrawal than it is to inflict such symptoms on the little one. You cannot take any medications such as patches or gum etc as again this all passes on to baby. Cold turkey...changing your routine, not doing things that trigger the impulse to smoke (i.e. drinking coffee, tea, coke etc) If you smoke after eating...clean up the kitchen instead, go for a walk with baby if you are able to...do something that takes you away from the routine you used to do.

The only alternative to quitting smoking is quitting breast feeding which of course is not the best of decisions. Consider your baby's health and also consider that cigarette smoking has been linked to SID's (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).

Best solution...quit smoking, for your baby and yourself,

Good luck.

Well not smoking is best for you and your baby! but smoking while breastfeeding is better than not breast feeding at all, nicotine does filter through your breast milk and it's best to wait until after a feeding before you smoke. the best way to quit is just to quit, or at least slow down, 4-5 a day is better than 20. Smoking can cause your baby to be fretful and can lower your milk supply.

Well sorry to tell you that you will just have to suck it up if you want to breast feed that badly you will should have the will power to stop. I did I know its hard but you have to choose what is best for your baby. Even if you didn't breastfeed and smoked around your baby or even wore the same clothes you smoked in aorund your baby it is just as deadly as breastfeeding with nicotine in your system.

You don't HAVE to quit while you are nursing. It is better to nurse and smoke than to formula feed and smoke. BUT.....of course it would be healthiest for mom and baby both if you didn't smoke. Good for you for wanting to find ways to cut out the cigarettes! I've never been a smoker, so hopefully someone who has will have some good tips for you on stopping.

It will affect you and your baby if you quit...for the better! If you were unable to quit while pregnant, I don't have much hope that you'll be motivated to quit now. However, you are being incredibly selfish in choosing to continue to breastfeed - now that your child is outside of your body it doesn't have to be exposed to the nicotene your body takes in...and you force it to! Just give the kid a bottle of formula and realize that if you can't have your cake and eat it too, you can at least make the choice that good for your child!

First of all, it is better to smoke and breastfeed than to smoke and formula feed! So keep on nursing regardless. I don't have any tips on quitting smoking. You could call 1800-QUIT NOW for help.

Why did you begin to breastfeed in the first place? The nicotine from ciggerettes stays in your breastmilk for four hours after you smoke, and it is very harmful to your baby! Many studies have shown that women who smoke, drink, or use drugs are better off feeding formula so their babies aren't affected. Don't put off quitting by telling yourself excuses. Throw the poison in the garbage and never touch it again! You are being very irresponsible, and I would never subject my kids to the dangers of nicotine.
