Captain is first, in charge, then there is the 1st, 2nd and 3rd mates which all have appointed jobs, and a quartermaster.. Then there is the cook. In racing there is the tactician and navigator, and helmsman, also sail tenders, grinders. Depending on the type of sailing ship, there is also the steward. Each has there job without which the ship would not run.On a ship there is the topmen, AB (ablebodied seamen), , and ordinary seamen., as well as the waisters(cook, carpenters, loblolly boys and ship surgeon, )midshipmen.

1 st, 2 ed and 3 ed mates all have different responsiblities. The navagator...well... they navagate. Then there are the engineers that keep things shipshape, the purser that acts as a sort of bookeeper/finance officer, the ship's doctor, the ship's carpenter and the cook. There is also the captain and sometimes a shipmaster, Forward in the focsule you will find the crew that work as laborers and get the jobs done. The sailmaster would repair the sails. Years ago ships would have a cabinboy that helped out with light duties and was used to satisfy the crews..er..ah..shall we say "needs" while at sea for months at a time. If it were a Naval vessel you would also have the master of arms that took care of the ships armory and weapons, and there were the marines that would board and take over an enemy ship.

Captain, Chief Mate, Second Mate, Third Mate, Bosun, A/B(able seaman) , O/S(ordinary seaman). Chief Engineer, First Assistant Engineer, Second Assistant Engineer, Third Assistant Engineer, QMED(Qualified Member of the Engineering Department), Wiper, Oiler. The Captain is in charge of the ship, kind of like the manager. There are two departments, deck and engine. Chief engineer is head of the engine dept. Bosuns hold an A/B document, and there are a number of A/B's, O/S's and QMED's. Oilers and wipers may hold an O/S, or an A/B document.
