My dad is a retired physician. His new full time job is playing poker (not literally). I'll be "home for Christmas" so I was thinking of buying a poker set - the other part of the present would be that I would let him teach me how to play! What do you think? He usually goes to the casinos etc. and raves about how the game is so challenging etc. and really makes you think... and I tend to be VERY conservative, not drinking (unless it's red wine, for the health benefits), being against gambling etc... What do you think?

sure. when you say something about teaching you... say it in a way that makes him know that you want to bond with him.

i know that he will love it!

It's not what you want, it's about what makes him happy. You may be against it but if playing poker makes him happy just support it and get him a nice chip set. Poker is challenging because it is a game of skill as well as a game of luck. Remember that poker has no edge to it, the house lays no odds on you winning or losing, so if you are more skilled you can win over others who make mistakes. All other games are gambling because the house has you beat before you sit down. Now poker can have an element of luck but in the long run if you play more skilled you will profit over others.

What a great idea!! Not only are you getting him something he'll like but showing an interest in what he enjoys. (Even though in some ways it goes against many of your beliefs).

It sounds like a great way to spend time together - bond, so to speak - and I'm sure he'll appreciate your effort and open-mindedness to this new experience.

Put a little note in with the gift telling him that "by accepting the gift, he is agreeing to teach you the fine art of poker".

Good luck!

p.s. if you don't want to gamble "real" money - get some play money/monolpoly money to learn with or include a few rolls of pennies for you to use while learning. I'm sure he'll get a chuckle out of that!

sounds like a good idea if he doesn't have them already. i think it's ok as long as you don't let it get out of hand. you should gamble with pennies. or make a limit of like $20 and don't buy back in. I am very conservative too so i know what you mean.

He would probably love it. You don't have to gamble much to play poker. Most in home games are low stakes.

I think that would be good, and it will also give you and Dad some Quality time together. You could also have Pizza delivered, so no one has to cook, on the night you play.

I think that would be great - not only is it one of his interests, but you are willing to get involved in his interests is going to be the best part of the gift. Especially since you aren't into that type of thing yourself.

Excellent gift - way to go!

I think it is a sweet, loving thing to do. It personalizes the gift in a way that he will always remember and cherish.
