Hearst was a major owner of newspapers on both coasts. His newspapers printed detailed and often exagerated reports of the treatment of the "poor Cubans" under Spanish rule. He also entertained Cuban revolutionaries. Hearst sent many reporters to Cuba, and even his own yacht filled with "supplies" to the Cubans trying to get rid of the Spanish. Hearst's editorial policies was to support Cuban independence and push America into war with the Spanish to effect this change. Newspaper headlines after the sinking of the Maine were directly under his control, and he had all of his papers write under the assumption that war was innevitable.
