Every muscle is used! Ive played a lot of sports before and swimming definitely has to be the most challenging and most muscle-building.

I can tell you that your chest, shoulder, and back muscles are very important, and that's just from me swimming at the gym. I was in physical therapy for damage to muscles in my chest, and I was able to tone all these muscles and repair the damaged tissue.

since those are the only strokes in swimming , you use every single muscle in your body on all the strokes.....even your butt
